Not many people realise there are two Christmas Islands. One in the Pacific Ocean, the site of nuclear testing 60yrs ago. The other an idyllic birding paradise in the Indian Ocean.
A Commonwealth Territory and part of Australia, Christmas Island is home to some of the world's rarest birds and a place often described as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean. Sir David Attenborough described its Red Crab migration as "one of the most spectacular migrations in the world" and its only 2 hours from Singapore!
From the time you land on this extinct volcano you are surrounded by thousands of soaring seabirds. 63% of the island is national park containing species of flora & fauna found nowhere else in the world.
Your experienced guide Richard Baxter will show you Abbott’s Booby, the world's rarest and largest booby. Unlike other boobys, Abbott’s nest only in the tallest rainforest trees deep into the island’s plateau. Christmas Island Frigatebird, the world's rarest frigatebird also resides on the island along with other endemics such as CI Imperial Pigeon, CI Thrush, CI Swiftlet, CI Goshawk, CI Hawk-Owl and CI White-eye.
Many believe the most spectatular bird seen daily around the island is the amazing golden morph of the White-tailed Tropicbird, known locally as the Golden Bosunbird.
